Tasmanian Women and Girls Sport Strategy 2026-2032
The Tasmanian Government is committed to further increasing opportunities for women and girls to participate in all levels of sport and active recreation.
The She moves. She leads. She Belongs. Tasmanian Women and Girls Sport Strategy 2026 – 2032 is the Government’s long-term framework to support and empower women and girls in all areas of the sport and active recreation sector.
Tasmanian women and girls face a range of barriers to participating in sport and active recreation – fewer girls than boys play sport, and women are under-represented in sport leadership roles across the country.
The Strategy is shaped by strong input from sporting organisations and the community. It sets a clear path for working together over the next six years to drive positive change.
Strategy vision
Women and girls have equal access and opportunities in sport and active recreation in a safe, inclusive and fun way.
The Strategy has three priority areas which focus on improving participation, supporting more women in leadership, and creating inclusive environments.
Priority Areas
The She moves. She leads. She belongs. Tasmanian Women and Girls Sport Strategy 2026-2032 identifies key themes that will guide an equal and more sustainable future for women and girls. These priority areas are:
Participation
Women and girls have equal opportunities to be involved and stay active across community, recreational, and elite sport.
- Increase the number of women and girls playing sport and being physically active
- Promote and develop initiatives that help address barriers to participation.
- Increase sector understanding and education in catering to the needs of women and girls.
Leadership
Women and girls are represented and empowered to undertake and thrive in all leadership roles.
- Increase the number of women and girls in sport leadership roles.
- Celebrate diverse leaders in Tasmania.
- Build networks of aspiring leaders to promote existing and facilitate new leadership pathways for women.
- Provide education and mentoring opportunities to leaders at all levels of sport.
Inclusive Environments
Women and girls can access and engage in spaces that prioritise their safety, comfort, and inclusion.
- Sporting organisations promote gender equity and challenge stereotypes.
- Promote and recognise sporting clubs and organisations that are championing cultural change.
- Ensure a gendered lens is applied to new sporting facilities and upgrades to existing facilities.
Implementation
To support the Strategy, a three-year action plan has been developed with clear actions that will help achieve the strategy’s objectives.
The Action Plan is structured around a combination of existing initiatives already underway and new activities focused on driving progress across the three priority areas of participation, leadership and inclusive environments.
